Short answer

In the commonly used Karnataka land-measurement convention, 1 acre equals 40 guntas and 1 gunta equals 1,089 square feet. Plot documents and approved plans should still be read using the exact stated measurements.

The basic conversion

1 acre = 40 guntas. Using 43,560 square feet per acre, 1 gunta = 1,089 square feet.

Useful plot-size examples

5.5 guntas is approximately 5,989.5 sq ft. 6 guntas is approximately 6,534 sq ft. 8 guntas is approximately 8,712 sq ft. Exact project plot areas may differ because the approved schedule can use precise square-foot measurements.

Why buyers should use exact plan areas

A shorthand size such as “about 5.5 guntas” is useful for orientation, but purchase decisions should use the exact plot area and dimensions in the approved plan and transaction documents.

How to compare plots

Consider both total area and plot geometry, road relationship and landscape context. Two plots with similar area can feel different on the ground.
